What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a tool for healing and mental well-being. Art therapy is an invitation to create art in a safe environment and then to explore its meaning or impact with a trained professional. This usually occurs over 6-8 sessions after an initial consultation with a therapist, but the format can vary depending on your needs. You and your therapist will create a plan of how to best meet your goals and will support you each session to make sure you are on track.

Art therapists do not interpret your artwork or provide diagnoses based on what you create. Instead, your therapist serves as a companion or guide as you uncover your own insights and understanding of your artwork. As creative expression allows us to connect to the deepest part of ourselves, shifts in perspective and behaviour can result, allowing you to process unresolved emotions, discover new insights, and bring about meaningful change in your life.

You are welcome to use any art materials you like! You might explore paint, clay, drawing materials, or even recycled or natural materials. Once you begin, your therapist may provide additional suggestions or guidance to help you determine which materials are suitable for you.

You do not have to be an artist to use art therapy. It is about exploring the parts of our inner world that are often difficult to express with words.

Art Therapy for Teams

In an art therapy workshop, participants explore a specific theme alongside others. As one-time events, workshops are short-term commitments and often focus on skill development. This service is provided by professional art therapists.

“This is what I look forward to during the week. It has been incredibly powerful and positive for me. Art therapy has helped me to figure things out, center myself, be creative, get insights, and find a way forward"
